AMITA developed a program of consular software applications for the Government of Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). This software, known as COSMOS in Canada, provides automated tools for the delivery and management of consular activities. COSMOS uses standard database technology from leading software vendors and a Windows user interface. The software is designed to be deployed over a worldwide network that currently runs with a low bandwidth. For smaller missions or honorary consuls, a web-based version offers the core functionality of the software over the Internet or an Intranet. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has deployed COSMOS in over 150 locations worldwide and has classified this system as mission-critical. In October of 2000, the COSMOS system was awarded the GTEC Gold Medal in the category of "Serving Canadians Better through IM/IT innovations – Improving Service Delivery to Citizens and Business" at the prestigious Distinction Awards of Excellence.
